Am I Behind?

I am graduating college next week which means I’m officially at a time in my life where big things are happening. People are getting engaged, married, having kids, buying homes. It’s easy to see all of these things and think, “Am I behind?” I’m here to tell you that you are not!

I think it is common to see other people living their lives and wish that for yourself (a cute puppy, a nice job, etc.) but the reality is that everyone has their own timelines. Just because five people from your high school just bought a house doesn’t mean that is in God’s plan for you right now. If you sit and harp on what you don’t have, you’ll never be able to enjoy what you do.

Savoring the moment

Life is so short. These seasons of life are so short. You owe it to yourself to enjoy the place you are at in your life. While it can be exciting to think about the future and what is to come, there is a line of dwelling on it and wishing your current season away. Imagine spending your entire time in high school wishing you could be in college. By the time you are in or graduating college, you’re going look back on your high school experience wishing you lived more in the moment.

Let yourself enjoy where you are now. You are not behind. You are exactly where you need to be in order to fulfill the plans that God has for you.

Social Medias Impact on Comparison

It’s hard to not compare our lives to others when we are constantly opening our phones to see it plastered across social media. Here’s the thing- our brains weren’t meant to see and compare ourselves to others lives as much as we do on social media. Of course it is great to follow influencers and gain inspiration for your own life, but it isn’t meant to be the expectation.

A boundary I have recently set with myself is to only follow 2-3 people that are living an “ideal life” of mine (such as an influencer working in the career that is ideal for me). I have found that if my entire feed is full of people living a life that I want, my mindset shifts from inspiration to comparison. Find something that works for you and allow yourself to be inspired, not comparing!

Overall, it’s not uncommon to think you are behind, but I’m here to tell you that you are not. How boring would it be if we were always doing the same exact thing? Exactly! We are meant to live different lives, have different stories, and different timelines. Embrace where you are now and realize it is all meant to be!
